Not Your Average Hair Oil
When we heard that Pureology was launching a hair oil, our first thought was, “Not another one!” Since hitting the mass market a couple of years ago, oils have saturated the market (pun intended). But, as we learned from Privé Salon stylist Tami Jensen, not all hair oils are created equal. Jensen, who’s had celebs like Emma Roberts and Nicole Richie in her chair, once lamented to us about how—after initially shiny, silky results—using certain oils left hers and her clients’ strands duller and drier over time. She blames the lackluster results on the products’ inclusion of silicone.
It should be noted, of course, that not all silicones deserve a bad rap; while certain water insoluble ones—dimethicone, dimethiconol, etc.—have the propensity to build up and weigh down hair, inhibiting the cuticle’s ability to absorb nutrients, other silicones—water soluble ones like dimethicone copolyol, lauryl methicone copolyol, and others—can yield lasting sleekness.
Unless you’re a scientist, though, decoding ingredient labels can be quite a task. Fortunately, Pureology’s Precious Oil is a no-brainer. Because it’s free of silicones and parabens, you can rest assured your tresses are getting the treatment they deserve. But that’s not the only reason we like it; with four different types of oil—sunflower seed, coconut, olive, and jojoba—it packs a punch.
According to Wendy Belanger, Pureology Global Artistic Director and owner of Influence Salon in Calgary, Canada, because of the wide spectrum of oils there’s literally something for everyone: “Sunflower seed oil is great for softness and color protection, coconut oil helps with elasticity, olive oil gives shine, and jojoba oil imparts moisture.”
The best thing about the Precious Oil, however, is that it’s not just good for your hair—it’s good for the earth. The product is Green Seal certified because of its recyclable packaging and biodegradable contents. Look for the oil in salons this May, and keep an eye out for additional Precious Oil products in August. We’re especially excited about the Precious Oil Shamp’Oil—hair is most fragile when it’s wet (the hydrogen bonds connecting the proteins within are broken down by water), so having a shampoo packed with nourishing oils sounds pretty great!
