Adam Lippes To Relaunch Signature Collection

Come February, Adam Lippes will relaunch both his signature collection and his Adam label, which focuses on women's and men's basics. The designer, who sold his company to Kellwood (which owns Vince and Rebecca Taylor) two years ago, has bought the rights to his name and label back. He last showed a collection for the Spring 2012 season in September.

Going forward, Lippes told WWD that he plans to recapture the spirit of his company when it first started seven years ago. “We’re not interested in the very big commercial business where more is more, more, more. I want to go back to how we started out, which was more about friends and family. I want to go back to almost taking the ego out of it,” he said. “I want there to be an appreciation for what we do. The business had lost its charm and intimacy.”

In that vein, Lippes plans to have an intimate presentation, rather than a runway show, for his return.

Louis Vuitton’s Yayoi Kusama Collab Gets Seven Pop-Up Shops

Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama’s spotty collaboration with Louis Vuitton is about to get seven dotty temporary homes. WWD reports that the French house is celebrating the partnership with pop-up boutiques placed around the world, the first of which will debut in New York’s SoHo on July 10. Outposts inside or near Vuitton stores at Hong Kong’s Pacific Place, Ngee Ann City in Singapore, the new Dover Street Market in Ginza, and Isetan’s Shinjuku branch in Tokyo are planned in the weeks that follow, and the launch will climax on August 23 and August 24 with large-scale installations at Printemps in Paris and Selfridges in London.
For those who can’t make it to these destinations, the pieces will also be sold at all of the brand’s 463 boutiques. Expect spot-covered silk pajamas, trenchcoats, necklaces, and bags. And come October 1, a second round of leathered accessories will drop, embossed with Kusama’s tentaclelike “nerves” motif.

Carine Roitfeld Does Dior

Since becoming a free agent, Carine Roitfeld has added a number of big names to her portfolio: in the past year alone, she’s worked on campaigns for Barneys, MAC, Givenchy, and Chanel. The latest luxury brand to be added to the list? Dior. Roitfeld collaborated with photographer Steven Meisel on the campaign for Dior’s new Golden Jungle beauty collection, out next month. The retro-inspired images highlight Daria Strokous wearing a Fall 2008 Dior couture hat.

Nicole Richie Is Launching Her First Perfume

Nicole Richie’s latest project? Foraying into beauty: she’s debuting her first fragrance, Nicole by Nicole Richie, in September, WWD reports.
The scent—which has hints of vanilla, amber, and cashmere woods—was inspired by the layered oils and lotions her mother wore when Richie was a child. “I have a very traditional Southern mom—you never left the house without lotion,” she told WWD. “Over her lotion went oil and perfume—she was very put together from head to toe. It wasn’t just a one-dimensional smell— there were many different layers.”

The fragrance comes housed in an Art Deco-inspired bottle that Richie created with designer Dale Brandon Kan. “I wanted it to represent different layers of a woman,” Richie explained. “We’re in an interesting time right now where women aren’t just one thing—there are many different parts to a woman. So I wanted to create a very intricate bottle that was still elegant, but not so in-your-face girly at the same time.”
Nicole by Nicole Richie will be sold in two Eau de parfum sizes, for $55 or $69, and will also come in a body lotion for $35 and a bath and shower gel for $28, all to be found in Macy’s, Nordstrom, and Dillard’s.
Now that Richie’s in the beauty category, hair may be next. “I’m not great with makeup, so it wouldn’t make sense for me to do a makeup line at the moment, but hair is something where I know the world very well, and so I probably will be focusing on that sometime soon,” she said.

Bon Iver Makes Shoes… Kinda

Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon is suddenly a constant presence in our collective subconscious. After spotting the hilarious tribute Tumblr “Bon Iver Erotic Stories”—a collection of micro-fiction employing the most earthy stereotypes of Vernon—it’s hard not to have a soft spot for the Wisconsin-bred musician. Now, Vernon has teamed up with Keep Company (the most reliable makers of not-too-girly vegan shoes) to create a pair of his own footwear. The Bon Iver shoe is an update of Keep’s Ramos model—a rounded-toe canvas desert boot—and boasts a marriage of herringbone and pale-salmon cotton, with a fishbone accent printed across the toes.
Proceeds from the shoes will benefit the Best Friends Animal Society, a Utah-based sanctuary for abandoned animals. This collaboration sparks a charitable trend for Keep, who first collaborated with the band Animal Collective last year, aiding another animal-benefiting non-profit. Bon Iver’s Keep shoes are for pre-sale now (with delivery slated for October), but only until July 1. After that, you’ll have to wait to get your hands on a pair once they hit Keep’s select stockists—which might not be a smart move, considering the popularity of this (rather dreamy) Grammy Award-winning crooner.

Hedi Slimane Changing Yves Saint Laurent’s Name

Hedi Slimane is already making big changes at Yves Saint Laurent—and he’s not even shown a collection yet. The brand’s new creative director has been designing in Los Angeles rather than at YSL’s Paris headquarters, and now WWD confirms that he plans to change the fashion house’s name.
Under Slimane, Yves Saint Laurent will become Saint Laurent Paris, with the new branding introduced in coming months. The iconic YSL logo, however, will not disappear.
Slimane, who was given “total creative responsibility for the brand image and all its collections,” WWD reports, is looking to recapture the impulses that inspired the house’s founder to launch the Saint Laurent Rive Gauche ready-to-wear line in 1966—among them youth, freedom and modernity. As such, Slimane plans to use the same fonts and a similar name to that era, a YSL spokesperson confirmed.

Keira Knightley’s Valentino Obsession Continues

Keira Knightley may be a face of Chanel, but it’s Valentino she’s worn twice in the past two weeks while promoting her new movie, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. Last week, it was a gold-embroidered black dress for her Late Night with Jimmy Fallon appearance, and then last night, Knightley made her red carpet return in a floral-embroidered taupe tulle gown at the movie’s LA Film Festival premiere. Both dresses are from Valentino’s Fall 2012 collection.

Will her promo tour for Seeking a Friend continue to be a Valentino fest? Her red carpet highlights point to likely so; As Grazia points out, in the last couple of years, Knightley has often relied on Valentino dresses to outfit her for late night appearances and film festival red carpets—moreso than any other brand.

Dior Launches Three Image-Filled Restrospective Books

Dior has teamed up with Assouline on a set of three retrospective volumes: Dior Fashion, Dior Fine Jewellery, and Dior Perfume. The three 80-page, jacketed hardcover tomes come in a slipcase emblazoned with Richard Avedon’s iconic 1955 portrait, “Dovima with the Elephants,” and house some of the most enduring images from the brand’s rich history—think Brigitte Bardot receiving the Diorissimo fragrance in 1960, and the lauded makeup artist Tyen’s campaign for Poison in 1985. See both images—a preview from Dior Perfume—after the jump.

Dip-Dyed Hair & Anne V in Prada’s New Campaign

While Prada’s fall men’s campaign is laden with actors, its women’s counterpart is all about the models—some well-established (Anne Vyalitsyna, Magdalena Frackowiak, Iselin Steiro) and some new on the scene (Elza Luijendijk, Vanessa Axente, Madison Headrick). Steven Meisel captured them all in the runway show’s dip-dyed hair, kohl-rimmed eyes, and jacquard suits.

Lady Gaga Unveils Her New Perfume, Fame

Lady Gaga’s perfume has been at least two years in the making now—or that’s how long she’s been talking about it publicly, at least. Originally thought to be called Monster, Gaga Tweets that the fragrance will actually be called Fame and is set to hit stores in September.
Although the pop star said in 2010 that the scent would smell like “blood and semen,” she clarifies in a second Tweet of the fragrance’s bottle that it is a mixture of “tears of Belladonna, crushed heart of Tiger Orchidea with a black veil of incense, pulverized apricot, and the combinative essences of saffron and honey drops.” It appears as a black liquid in the bottle, but sprays clear and becomes invisible once airborne; as Gaga wrote in the press release, Fame is “a beautiful prospect with a dark heart.”
She collaborated on the yet-to-be-seen advertisement with photographer Steven Klein, who directed her “Alejandro” video, and the bottle design with photographer Nick Knight, who directed her “Born This Way” video.

Customize Your Minx Nails

Since their introduction in 2007, Minx’s polish-free nail wraps have earned quite the cult following, thanks in part to fans like Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Katy Perry, and Rihanna, and runway partnerships with McQueen and Missoni. In the past, Minx has only been available in-salon, but this week, that changes: the brand has launched an at-home version of its nail appliqués in eight different designs—including Triangle Tango, Diamond Diabolique, Summer Splash, Silver Moons, Gold Moons, Wild Pink Cheetah, Technical Tribal, and MinxLusion Chex (pictured, left)—available starting this week at Ulta stores nationwide.

Kate Middleton’s Back in McQueen

Kate Middleton’s predilection for Alexander McQueen dresses is still going strong. Every time she’s worn a dress designed by Sarah Burton for McQueen, it’s had long sleeves, and the latest is no exception.
For her appearance in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee River Pageant in London yesterday, Middleton wore a red dress from McQueen’s Pre-Fall 2011 collection—which had been worn previously by Kim Kardashian—but had it customized with the aforementioned sleeves and a longer, knee-skimming hemline. She paired it with her favorite nude LK Bennett heels and a matching red clutch and Sylvia Fletcher hat.
The dress‚ with its long sleeves and pleated skirt, is not dissimilar to the Emilia Wickstead dress Middleton wore last week—she certainly has a penchant for that combination. And it seems she may have color coordinated with her mother and sister yesterday, in a subtle nod to the Union Jack: while Kate was in red, Pippa wore navy and white, and Carole Middleton went with white.

Banana Republic & Trina Turk Go to the (Rescue) Dogs

It may not be the dog days of summer quite yet, but Banana Republic is getting a head start. To celebrate its upcoming collaboration with Trina Turk, the retailer partnered with The American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). The resultant video features rescue dogs with names like Da Vinci and Harry Truman jumping (literally) for brightly-printed bikini tops and wagging their tails for Palm Springs-inspired scarves. The collection launches June 7, but Banana Republic fans on Facebook will be able to shop it a day early.

Karl Lagerfeld’s New Tees Feature His Face and Hands

Karl Lagerfeld’s latest collaboration? A set of four limited-edition t-shirts produced with the East London-based design boutique I Love Dust. The tees are very self-referential, depicting Karl’s name in various fonts, a trompe l’oeil image of his signature tie and jacket, a fingerless-gloved hand, and his portrait formed by Lagerfeld quotes like, “Vanity is the most healthiest thing in life” and “Chic is a kind of mayonnaise, either it tastes or it doesn’t.”
An offshoot of Karl’s new contemporary line, the tees are available for $95 starting today on Karl.com and at Colette in Paris and the Karl pop-up store in Manhattan (located at 375 Bleecker Street through August, open Monday through Saturday, 11 am to 7 pm, and Sunday, noon to 7 pm).
