Time to Take the Leap

Ah, the L.B.D. — so simple, so sensible, so ... snoozy. This holiday season, may we suggest the L.B.J.?

The little black jumpsuit is as easy as a dress: Throw it on and you’re out the door. Wear it to work with a blazer and, come evening, pile on baubles or add a knockout belt for instant party-worthy attire.

Jumpsuits are everywhere. It seems as if every designer has at least one to offer. Not so long ago, e-tailers were largely perplexed as to where to put the couple of random jumpsuits they bought — with dresses? with pants? — but now they’re listed in drop-down menus. Shopbop currently has 189 options, 87 of them black.

So who is wearing all of these jumpsuits?

“It’s a girl that’s a little more confident, a little more fashion savvy and not afraid to stand out,” says Jennifer Zuccarini, the designer of the Fleur du Mal line of seductive lingerie and ready-to-wear. But even if a jumpsuit seems daunting at first, wearers often become quite evangelical once they discover how effortless it is to wear.

“You don’t have to think about it too much, you just add heels and some makeup and you’re done,” says Maria Cornejo, who designs for a modern woman like herself who needs an outfit to take her all the way from breakfast meetings to late-night events. “Nobody has the time to go home and get changed anymore.”

Another modern woman, the makeup artist April Greaves, who owns multiple jumpsuits, adds: “They always feel a little more racy and less serious than pants and a shirt, while more fun and unexpected than a skirt.”

And the L.B.J. has one more advantage over an L.B.D. As the temperature drops, it keeps your legs covered from the cold. Then, if the party’s a bore, you can ride a Citi Bike home.
